Gala raises more than $84,000 for WoodHaven Nursing and Alzheimer’s Care Center

Local family donates an additional $50,000 for the center

More than 475 guests danced the evening away to benefit WoodHaven Nursing and Alzheimer’s Care Center as the Southeastern Regional Medical Center Foundation hosted its 18th annual gala on Friday, Feb. 26 at Pinecrest Country Club.

The event’s benefactors, sponsors, patrons and guests raised more than $84,000 for the center, which is an affiliate of Southeastern Regional Medical Center. The center is a 115-bed nursing home offering both skilled nursing and intermediate care and includes a 15-bed unit dedicated exclusively to the care of those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders.

Chairing the gala committee were Sarah and Jeff Campbell, M.D., and Jennifer and Ken Stephenson, all of Lumberton who, along with SRMC President/CEO Joann Anderson and her husband Terry, SRMC Foundation Board Vice Chairman Coble Wilson and his wife Pattie, and SRMC Board Chairman W.C. Washington and his wife Joan, were on hand to greet guests as they arrived for an evening of dancing to the music of the Bill Bolen Band of Chapel Hill.

Under the leadership of Sarah Campbell and Jennifer Stephenson, the 51 Foundation volunteers carried out the Evening at Tiffany’s gala theme with a striking décor of teal and white, accented with white calla lilies, tulips, oriental lilies and cushion mums. Billy Davis and the staff of Flowers by Billy assisted with the theme design and decorations.

During the recognition program, Wilson announced an additional donation by Robeson County natives and sisters Felicia Britt, Rosalynn Jacobs, Brigitte Laney and Donna Lowry for a donation of $50,000 in honor of their parents, James and Rosa Jacobs, and grandparents, the late James and Mollie Jacobs and Mr. James W. and the late Della Thomas.

“Starting their own home health care agencies, Caring Touch Home and Behavioral Health Care and Carolina Hearts Home Care, has enabled them to provide health care for the elderly population,” said Wilson. “They have a desire to give back to their community. Three of the sisters got their start in nursing through Southeastern’s academic scholarship loan program many years ago. They have not forgotten their roots and where their love of helping patients began.”

Wilson also expressed appreciation on behalf of the Foundation for the gala’s 37 benefactors, who had given $1,200 each, 12 sponsors, who donated $600 each, and 41 patrons who each contributed $300. Guests paid $200 per couple to attend.

Sissy Grantham, director of the SRMC Foundation, thanked the gala co-chairs and volunteer committee for their efforts. Grantham also recognized past gala chairpersons.

A special raffle was held for the following items: artwork created and donated by Thomas Ard and Bunny Barker; a pearl diamond ring and necklace donated by Bob’s Jewel Shop of Lumberton; cosmetic enhancement therapy donated by Campbell Ear, Nose and Throat, P.A.; a spa package donated by the Southeastern Lifestyle Day Spa; and a handbag donated by Style Star.
